The 6G conference, organized by Istanbul Medipol University's Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences, took place at Medipol University's South Campus from September 23 to 25, 2024. The conference, where projects shaping the future of communication technologies were showcased, brought together many high-level participants from the public sector, academia, and private industry.

In the conference, which focused on communication technologies and Turkey's vision in this field, opening speeches were made by the President of the Defense Industry, Prof. Dr. Haluk Görgün, Deputy Minister of Industry and Technology Dr. Çetin Ali Dönmez, Deputy Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Dr. Ömer Fatih Sayan, Rector of Istanbul Medipol University Prof. Dr. Ömer Ceran, and Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences, Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Arslan.

The event featured 60 expert speakers across seven different panels, where 6G technology developments and Turkey's strategic initiatives in this field were discussed in detail.

TÜBİTAK BİLGEM HİSAR Lab Stands Out with Its Projects
 
 

At the conference, TÜBİTAK BİLGEM's Communication and Signal Processing Laboratory (HİSAR) garnered significant attention with its projects, including a Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS)-supported millimeter-wave wireless communication system, RIS optimization with xApp in an open RAN-supported 5G FR1 network, and an analog beamforming project with 32 antennas operating in 5G FR2. visited the HİSAR booth to receive detailed information from the lab's researchers about these projects.

Using an xApp application on a private 5G network, the booth showcased how RIS technology enhances performance in 5G networks through optimized network configurations, significantly improving communication quality.

On the first day of the event, Acting President of TÜBİTAK BİLGEM Dr. Ali Görçin visited the booths, examined the displayed projects, and received information from the researchers. Dr. Görçin also answered participants' questions about HİSAR Laboratory's innovative work.

Advanced Technology in Millimeter-Wave Frequencies with RIS Support
 
 

In the project demonstrating data transmission at millimeter-wave frequencies with RIS support, a transmission unit with a 16-element antenna array operating at 27.3 GHz showcased analog beamforming. The receiver and transmitter experimented with different beam combinations to determine the optimal direction for transmission and reception. During the demonstration, participants were shown how RIS technology can be integrated into communication infrastructure and how it can boost performance. In another project, a transmission unit with a 32-element antenna array developed by BİLGEM was integrated with open-source 5G FR2 emulator software, demonstrating in real-time the performance improvement provided by analog beamforming.

Collaborations Shaping the Future of Communication Technologies
 
 

TÜBİTAK BİLGEM engaged in knowledge and experience sharing with other organizations at the conference, taking significant steps towards future communication technologies. HİSAR Laboratory's innovative projects were highly praised for contributing to Türkiye's goal of advancing 6G and beyond technologies.

Throughout the event, discussions were held on strengthening Turkey's potential in communication technologies and its position on the international stage, with decisions made to hold bilateral meetings with many companies for future collaborations.

Uninterrupted Communication with Mobile Base Stations
 
 

Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) base stations provide reliable, high-bandwidth wireless connections in areas where traditional infrastructure falls short, or in special situations such as natural disasters, smart farming, or sporting events. These UAVs, which can stay airborne for long periods at high altitudes, offer cost-effective and long-term connectivity solutions for rural areas. Their mobility and flexible altitude adjustments effectively enhance the capacity and coverage of terrestrial communication networks.

5G/6G and UAVs in Precision Agriculture
 
 

Digital farming and precision agriculture are reaching a new level with IoT technologies and 5G/6G connectivity services. The goal is to produce higher quality and more sustainable food with less pesticide use. The advanced AI, machine learning, and sensing capabilities offered by 6G technology will further enhance automation and efficiency in the agricultural sector. Autonomous vehicles and UAVs are transforming traditional farming methods and introducing innovative solutions to the industry.

UAV Designs Shaping the Future
 
 

The UAV designed by HİSAR Laboratory will be used both in mobile base station tests and as an autonomous AI-powered agricultural drone in precision farming. In the near future, our cost-effective VTOL (vertical take-off and landing) UAV designs, capable of reaching altitudes of 5,000 meters and staying airborne for 6-7 hours, will take to the skies.

As TÜBİTAK BİLGEM, we continue to work in many areas, including communication technologies, to contribute to our country's independence in the fields of information and communication technologies.

The “Communication Technologies Workshop” was held at the TÜBİTAK Gebze Campus with the participation of 20 companies, members of the Communication Technologies Cluster (HTK), and TÜBİTAK BİLGEM.

The workshop was attended by Dr. Ali Görçin, Director of BİLGEM, İlyas Kayaduman, Vice Chairman of HTK, as well as senior executives from BİLGEM and member companies of HTK.

In the first part of the program, presentations were made about the technologies developed within BİLGEM. In the second session, presentations were given by 16 companies from HTK. During the breaks between the sessions, company representatives and TÜBİTAK BİLGEM researchers shared knowledge and experiences.

Collaboration and Partnership Opportunities Discussed
 

Throughout the workshop, B2B meetings were held with companies. In this context, related companies were paired with TÜBİTAK BİLGEM units, and cooperation opportunities in various specific topics were discussed. Collaborative projects with many companies were identified, and future meetings and visits were planned.

This workshop is expected to pave the way for significant developments in strengthening public-private partnerships and enriching the ecosystem in the field of communication technologies.

The first test chip has been successfully produced as part of The European Pilot Project, in which TÜBİTAK BİLGEM plays a significant role. The band-gap reference circuit, temperature and voltage sensors, and test control digital block design, developed by our Integrated Circuit Design and Training Laboratory (TÜTEL) team, have passed all tests with flying colors.

This milestone marks the successful completion of the first test chip using 12nm FinFET technology. The design of the band-gap reference circuit, temperature and voltage sensors, and test control digital block on this chip was executed by the TÜTEL team at TÜBİTAK BİLGEM.

The EUPILOT Project, which produced this 12nm FinFET technology-based test chip, is notable for being the first fully European-designed and manufactured open-source test chip for High-Performance Computing (HPC) Systems and High-Performance Data Analytics (HPDA). The project involves 19 partners, including TÜBİTAK BİLGEM.

Within the scope of the project, the test chip includes RISC-V based accelerators that support PCIe Gen 6.0 and CXL 3.0 interfaces. These HPC chips are crucial for processing large datasets at high speeds, providing essential solutions in fields such as scientific research, artificial intelligence, and industrial applications.

About the EUPILOT Project

The EUPILOT Project is a collaborative effort led by the Barcelona Supercomputing Center, bringing together 19 partner organizations, including TÜBİTAK BİLGEM. The project's goal is to advance technology in the fields of High-Performance Computing (HPC) and High-Performance Data Analytics (HPDA) within Europe, strengthening Europe's leadership and technological independence in these critical areas.

The Importance of HPC

High-Performance Computing (HPC) is essential for processing vast amounts of data and performing complex computations at incredible speeds. Typically implemented through supercomputers made up of thousands of computing nodes, HPC plays a vital role across various sectors, from scientific research to industrial applications.

How HPC Systems Work

HPC systems are designed with a highly integrated architecture where computing, networking, and storage components operate in unity. Computing servers form clusters and work in parallel, connected to data storage systems. Ensuring each component operates at peak performance is key to the overall efficiency of the HPC infrastructure.

Applications of HPC

HPC technology is used across a wide range of industries, from scientific research to industrial production. The ability of HPC to process data rapidly accelerates technological advancements in areas such as the discovery of new energy sources, weather forecasting, and medical diagnostics. Additionally, HPC is used in the media industry for processing special effects and supporting live broadcasts.

The test chips, incorporating the integrated circuit subsystems designed by the TÜTEL team, were delivered to researchers and successfully passed all subsequent tests. These designed blocks are set to be integrated into the hardware accelerator chip.

This process is expected to significantly contribute to the digital transformation of our country’s industry, SMEs, and public institutions.

The consortium, led by the Turkish Employers’ Association of Metal Industries (MESS), is based on the extensive industrial experience and expertise of its members. The project aims to accelerate the digital and green transition, particularly by promoting the use of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, considering the low level of digitalization in the high-tech products of Turkish manufacturing sector SMEs.

In this context, TÜBİTAK BİLGEM will contribute to the consortium with its infrastructure and competencies within the Artificial Intelligence Institute, Cloud Computing and Big Data Research Laboratory (B3LAB), and Software Testing and Quality Evaluation Laboratory (YTKDL).

As part of the cooperation protocol signed between TÜBİTAK BİLGEM and the Forensic Medicine Institute to strengthen domestic forensic analysis infrastructure, a workshop program was held on Tuesday, July 23.

The workshop, which took place at the TÜBİTAK Gebze Campus, was attended by TÜBİTAK BİLGEM President Dr. Ali Görçin and Forensic Medicine Institute President Dr. Hızır Aslıyuksek. At the event, expert researchers from TÜBİTAK BİLGEM met with forensic IT and document examination experts to exchange information.

During the workshop program, general presentations from both institutions were made, and detailed presentations were given on projects including artificial intelligence, cryptocurrency, Forensic Analysis Infrastructure (A3), Ion Software, and Document Examination Software (FORDEX). Additionally, the delegation from the Forensic Medicine Institute visited the laboratories of the related projects to gain on-site information.

This workshop is expected to be a significant milestone in strengthening the cooperation between TÜBİTAK BİLGEM and the Forensic Medicine Institute and in developing the Forensic Analysis Infrastructure (A3) with domestic and national resources.

The Artificial Intelligence Ecosystem 2024 Call, coded 1711-YZE-2024, which was launched last year in Turkey to meet the needs of organizations and promote the use of artificial intelligence in problem-solving, received great interest. Under this call, various projects in areas such as Smart Manufacturing Systems, Smart Agriculture, Food and Livestock, Financial Technologies, Climate Change Effects, and Smart Education Technologies are being supported by TÜBİTAK BİLGEM Artificial Intelligence Institute (YZE).

Within this scope, contributions are being made to projects addressing issues in many sectors, including automotive, chemistry, and energy. These projects aim to perform routine and repetitive tasks more quickly and easily through artificial intelligence and robotic process automation (RPA). 

Thanks to the project “Design of an AI-Based Pollen Classification Machine in Beekeeping,” realized through university-industry collaboration, the pollen collected by bees can now be classified by color. This project, conducted in cooperation between Ankara University, Yıldırım Plastik, and VITEX Honey Alinda Beekeeping, uses artificial intelligence to accelerate the classification process by tenfold.

With artificial intelligence algorithms, the project, which reduces the sorting process that would take days to just a few hours by creating datasets, stands out as one of the successful projects supported under the 1711-YZE-2024 Artificial Intelligence Ecosystem 2024 Call. Additionally, it is noteworthy for being the first project in the world to use artificial intelligence technology in this field.

Within the scope of the project, in addition to the increase in the performance of the Revenue Administration in receiving tax returns from taxpayers, a more efficient system developed with open source software has been put into use to enable taxpayers to submit tax returns in a fast, uninterrupted and secure manner.

The system was made available not only to Bank Transactions Tax taxpayers, but also to a total of 7.5 million taxpayers. As TÜBİTAK BİLGEM, we continue to be at the heart of technologies that will make life easier for all our citizens.

As every year, we participated in the Locked Shields 2024 (Locked Shields 2024) exercise, the most comprehensive cyber security exercise organised by the NATO Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence (CCDCOE) at the end of April, with our expert researchers from TÜBİTAK BİLGEM Cyber Security Institute (SGE). We represented our country with 11 experts in 5 different fields in the blue team assigned for defence purposes.

In addition to taking part in the teams formed for network security, artificial intelligence security, malware and reverse engineering, web application security, gas and energy systems security, an expert from NATO CCDCOE in Tallinn, Estonia took part in the support team defined for the preparation of the exercise environment. We are proud to be a part of this organisation formed by different teams from many levels of our country. We congratulate our TÜBİTAK BİLGEM SGE team.
